Former President Donald Trump was injured in an apparent assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. According to multiple reports, gunshots were fired at the event, leaving one spectator dead and two others critically injured. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed at the scene by law enforcement.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage show Trump suddenly contracting his body and clutching his ear before dropping to the ground as Secret Service agents rushed to shield him. Blood was visible on the right side of Trump’s head, indicating he had been struck by a bullet or shrapnel.

The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the shooting, which Attorney General Merrick Garland has called “an attack on our democracy.” Garland stated that the Justice Department will “bring every available resource to bear to this investigation” and vowed that the government “will not tolerate violence of any kind.”

In the aftermath, Trump’s allies have accused President Biden and Democrats of stoking political violence through their rhetoric, claiming their portrayal of Trump as an “authoritarian fascist” led directly to the assassination attempt However, Biden condemned the violence, saying “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.”

The shooting occurred just days before the Republican National Convention is set to take place in Milwaukee, raising questions about heightened security measures for the high-profile event. The RNC has not yet commented on any changes to its security plans in light of the attack.
