flood in India: On Friday, members of various parties in Rajya Sabha raised the demand of giving respectable salary and dignified life to nurses, providing adequate central assistance to flood affected states and not discriminating in compensation for the death of sanitation workers in accidents. During this, some members also demanded to increase railway facilities in their respective areas and speed up the approved railway projects.

1). CPI(M) MP VK Shivdasan made this demand

VK Sivadasan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Kerala raised the issue of the condition of nurses in the country and said that according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization, there should be three nurses per 1,000 population but this number in the country is not even half of this. He said, ‘The country needs 60 lakh nurses. There are not even enough hospitals here. We do not have enough nurses and nurses are not getting proper salary.’ He said that the nurse and patient ratio in the country is also not adequate. Nurses have to work 9 to 14 hours a day and their starting salary is much less than the minimum wage.

They are forced to work under very unfavourable terms and conditions. “They work under extremely challenging conditions. There is an urgent need to ensure their decent income, career goals and dignity of the nursing community,” said Sivadasan, who demanded the government to take appropriate steps in this direction.

2). TMC MP Sushmita Dev said- we need funds

Trinamool Congress’s Sushmita Dev raised the issue of severe floods in Assam and West Bengal and said it has caused huge damage in both the states. She said floods occur every year but no plan is available yet. “Give adequate funds to the states. Don’t say north Bengal should be separated and Barak Valley should be separated. We need funds. Give us solutions to prevent floods. Give funds for rehabilitation in Assam and Bengal,” she said.

3). What did BJP MP Ajit Madhavrao Gopchade say?

Ajit Madhavrao Gopchade of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised the issue of the Nanded-Bidar railway line not being completed till date despite being approved in the 2018-19 budget. He said that no concrete action has been taken in this direction till date. He said, ‘Please start the construction of Nanded-Bidar railway line immediately for the spiritual, economic, social and cultural development of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

4). Congress MP JB Mather raised the issue of sanitation workers

Congress’ JB Mather raised the issue of sanitation workers and said that they work without any safety gear and proper training and hence often face challenging situations. He urged for improving their condition and making arrangements for proper compensation in case of an accident.

5). BJP MP Madan Rathore demanded a direct train to Delhi

BJP’s Madan Rathore raised the demand to start a direct train service from Pali district headquarters to Jaipur and the national capital Delhi. He said that Pali is a hub of textile industry and due to this people from there frequently travel to Jaipur and Delhi. He said that there is not a single train that leaves from there at night and reaches Jaipur or Delhi in the morning.
