A portion of a Kentucky highway was closed Saturday night after five people were shot, officials said.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting. Laurel County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said all five shooting victims are in stable condition.
This Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that the shooting happened on I-75, which was closed at Exit 49, nine miles north of London, Ky. He said the highway was closed, but not elaborated, “due to an active shooter situation.”
Randall Waddle, Mayor of London, said in a Facebook video Officials said they were searching for a “suspect or suspect” in “rugged terrain” in the northern part of Laurel County.
Deputy Acciardo said helicopters and infrared scanners were being used to locate the gunman in the woods.
The London Police Department said on Saturday night that a A person of interest was identified and asked the public for any information about his whereabouts. The city of London is about 90 miles south of Lexington.
Angel Jarrett was working at a 49er truck stop when someone called her that shots had been fired nearby.
Eventually, multiple police cars surrounded the truck stop near the exit and put the facility on lockdown.
“We’re not allowed in or out,” Ms. Jarrett said. “It’s a bit panicky but we’re fine. They’re surrounding us, the police.
St. Joseph’s London, a hospital in London that is part of CHI St. Joseph’s Health, said it had received “multiple patients and are being treated for minor injuries.”
Albert B. of the University of Kentucky. Two patients are being treated at Chandler Hospital, the spokeswoman said. His condition was unknown.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on social media that it was sending agents from its Louisville office to assist state police and local authorities “with a serious incident” near Interstate 75 in Laurel County.
