Authorities in Kentucky were searching for a suspect in connection with a shooting on an interstate highway Sunday morning that left at least five people critically injured.
Officers were called to Interstate 75 at Exit 49, about eight miles north of London, about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of someone shot, Laurel County Sheriff John Root said. statement early sunday
They found nine vehicles with gunshot damage and five victims with serious injuries in the northbound and southbound lanes, Sheriff Root said.
All five victims were in stable condition Saturday, Laurel County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said.
The London Police Department said on Saturday night that a A person of interest was identified and asked the public for any information about his whereabouts. The city of London is about 90 miles south of Lexington.
Deputy Acciardo said that helicopters and infrared scanners are being used to search the forests.
Randall Waddle, Mayor of London, said in a Facebook video that authorities were searching for a “suspect or suspects” in “rugged terrain” in the northern part of Laurel County.
Authorities closed I-75 for several hours Saturday night, “due to the risk of cars passing through the area of the shooting,” Sheriff Root said.
Angel Jarrett was working at a 49er truck stop, near where the shooting took place, when someone told her shots had been fired nearby.
Eventually, multiple police cars surrounded the truck stop and put it on lockdown.
“We’re not allowed in or out,” Ms. Jarrett said. “It’s a little nervous, but we’re fine..”
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on social media that it was sending agents from its Louisville office to assist Kentucky State Police and local authorities “with a serious incident” near Interstate 75 in Laurel County.
