Finger food for dinner

Hi everyone, me again.

Thousands of miles away from my hometown, Los Angeles, I recently made a friend who grew up just a few miles from me and shares great feelings for many of the same restaurants back home. The list of dishes that reminded us of small runs in the big city got so long, we threw a dinner party to recreate some of them.

We started together Bacon-wrapped dates Topped with Parmesan, as Suzanne Goin does at her restaurant AOC There were thin slices of godmother sandwiches, one Italian hero from Bay Cities It is not an either-or but a more-is-more situation. Salami, mortadella, capocolo, ham and prosciutto. Dill pickles and giardiniera. Lettuce, tomato and onion.

But the food was the real hero Mexican hot dogs (Above): Bacon-wrapped and dressed with charred peppers and onions and a zigzag of ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. (It was a double bacon-wrapped night, chased down with martinis Musso and Frank Grill: stirred, absent vermouth and chilled.)

on the sidewalk Outside of many games, shows and late-night venues in Los Angeles, you can hear hot dogs sizzling on portable griddles. The smell of sweet onions and smoky bacon hits your stride. However, you don’t need a cast iron grill to make it at home; In the oven, the bacon renders nicely and curls around the hot dogs while the jalapeños are flanked—it’s a sheet-pan meal!

This dinner-ode to two people’s special Los Angeles was fun because the dishes didn’t make much sense together outside of our own memories — and most of it was finger food.

When we lose the cutlery, “we feel everything,” as Ligaya mishan. wrote in T Magazine in February. “The nerve endings in our fingers are triggered; Our senses expand. We get more flavor.”

So tonight, feel your food. Chapati slices outside a Rolex. Airy squish of Separate the milk bread rolls. Bounce down the rigid shells of Peel and eat the shrimp. The warmth of Chocolate Donut Muffin.

And because I’m always thinking about how to reduce ingredients, minutes, and recipes in recipes for you New York Times CookingI can’t help but point out: eating with your hands means fewer things to wash.
