Eilat Blast Sparks Investigation Amid Fears of Houthi Retaliatory Strikes on Israel

Recent events have escalated tensions between Israel and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, particularly following a drone attack on Tel Aviv. This incident has prompted significant military responses and raised fears of further retaliatory strikes.

On July 19, a drone strike attributed to the Iran-backed Houthis hit central Tel Aviv, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. This attack, reportedly executed using a new type of drone that evaded Israeli defenses, marked a notable breach of Israel’s air security. In response, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant vowed retaliation, leading to airstrikes on July 20 targeting military facilities in Hodeidah, Yemen, where the Houthis are based. These strikes aimed at oil depots and other military objectives, causing casualties and damage as reported by various sources, including Al-Masirah TV, which is affiliated with the Houthis.

Following these developments, reports emerged of explosions in Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city, prompting the Israeli military to investigate. While the cause of these explosions remains unclear, there are concerns they could be linked to a potential Houthi counter-attack. Social media circulated unverified videos showing interceptor missiles being launched, reflecting heightened alertness in the region.

The Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks in support of Gaza, asserting that Israeli military actions will not deter their resolve. They have previously disrupted shipping in the Red Sea and threatened further assaults as long as the conflict in Gaza persists. The situation remains tense, with Israel enhancing its air defenses amid fears of ongoing retaliatory strikes from the Houthis.
