Earthquake: Earthquake of 4.9 magnitude hits Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir, strong tremors felt

Strong tremors of earthquake were felt in Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning. According to the information, this earthquake occurred at around 6.45 am. The tremors of the earthquake were so strong that people woke up. People came out of their houses. However, there is no news of any loss of life or property. Its depth is being reported to be 5 km.

To understand it scientifically, we have to understand the structure of the earth. The earth is situated on tectonic plates. There is liquid lava beneath it and tectonic plates float on it. Sometimes these plates collide with each other. Due to repeated collisions, the corners of the plates get bent and due to excessive pressure, these plates start breaking. In such a situation, the energy coming out from below finds a way to come out. When this creates a disturbance, then an earthquake occurs.

Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale. The Richter scale is a mathematical scale to measure the intensity of earthquake waves, it is called the Richter Magnitude Test Scale. On the Richter scale, earthquakes are measured on a scale from 1 to 9 from its center i.e. the epicenter. This scale measures the intensity based on the energy released from within the earth during an earthquake.

Know what could be the impact according to the intensity of the earthquake on the Richter scale:
– Earthquakes of 0 to 1.9 on the Richter scale are detected only by seismographs.
– When an earthquake occurs on 2 to 2.9 Richter scale, there is slight vibration.
– When an earthquake of 3 to 3.9 on the Richter scale occurs, the impact is as if a truck is passing near you.
– Windows may break if an earthquake of 4 to 4.9 Richter scale occurs. Frames hanging on walls may fall down.
– Furniture may shake if an earthquake of 5 to 5.9 occurs on the Richter scale.
– If an earthquake of 6 to 6.9 Richter scale occurs, the foundation of buildings may crack. Upper floors may get damaged.
