During the hearing on the Kolkata incident, CJI asked- when 4447 CCTV cameras were installed, then why did this incident happen?

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said on the case related to RG Kar Medical College that CISF should not let anyone enter the emergency ward without adequate security check. He also ordered that the photographs of the victim or her dead body be removed from all social media platforms with immediate effect. On Monday, the CJI heard a petition related to this case.

In this regard, the petitioner said that CCTV cameras should be installed in all colleges. If any incident occurs, an alarm should be raised immediately. In case of any incident, the college management should immediately lodge a complaint FIR. There should be means to reach the police station.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who is pleading on behalf of the government, said that we are working on it. On this, Sibal also cited his report. Commenting on the government’s report, the CJI said that according to you, 4447 CCTV cameras were installed. If so many cameras were installed, then why did this incident happen? In the case of RG Kar Medical College, tell us what equipment has been installed? Just telling about the funds will not work. Rather tell what progress has been made?

Kapil Sibal said that protests are happening everywhere in the state. 41 policemen have been injured. Protests are happening without police permission. Doctors’ lawyer Geeta Luthra said that senior doctors are on duty. Only medical students and junior doctors are on strike because their lives are in danger.

The CJI has said that the doctors should return to their work. There will be no punitive action against them. We are taking measures for them. If they do not return, on what basis will we be able to stop the state government from taking action against them?

Advocate Geeta Luthra said that junior doctors do not want to do duty inside the building due to lack of safe environment inside the hospital college. They are ready to do their duty by camping outside. They do not have toilets, rest rooms and other security facilities inside.

After this, the CJI said in his order that the protesting doctors should return to duty immediately. Otherwise, disciplinary action will be taken. The court has ordered to take appropriate measures for the safety and security of the doctors.

The West Bengal government told the court that the doctors are still on strike. So far 6 lakh people are deprived of treatment. People are dying due to lack of treatment. 23 patients have died due to lack of treatment.

The doctors told the court that no senior doctor is on strike. Yes, the junior doctors have still not returned to work because they are scared. They are receiving threats.

The Supreme Court said that the government should resolve the issue of doctors’ safety on a priority basis. The government should not take any action against doctors until 5 pm on Tuesday. Doctors should return to work before 5 pm on Tuesday.

The country’s top court said that the West Bengal government should take steps to instill confidence in the minds of doctors that their safety concerns will be addressed promptly and in a proper manner. The police should ensure that the necessary conditions are created to ensure the safety of all doctors.

When the court said that the government should ensure that no punitive action is taken against the protesting doctors, Kapil Sibal said that we have photographs in which those students are pelting stones.

CJI said that we have given two days’ time. Young doctors should now return to their work. We know what is happening on the ground! You return to work first. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police will ensure security. You have to return to work now. If you do not come to work, do not hold anyone responsible for disciplinary action against you.

The Supreme Court said that you cannot say that senior people are working so we will not work. Doctors have a duty towards society.
