On July 14, 2024, veteran photojournalist Doug Mills of The New York Times captured a shocking image during an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. Mills, who has been covering the White House since 1983, was standing just a few feet away from Trump when the attack occurred.

In an interview, Mills described the harrowing moments: “It happened so fast but now I can see it all in slow-motion. I was taking pictures when the pops started happening. I just happened to have my finger on the shutter and I heard the pops and kept shooting.” His quick reflexes and experience allowed him to capture the precise moment a bullet grazed Trump’s ear, with the image showing a long white streak behind the former president’s head.

“I never thought I’d ever see an assassination attempt on a president and be there to photograph it,” Mills said. The FBI identified the assassin as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was shot down by Secret Service snipers after firing multiple shots at Trump from a nearby rooftop.

Mills’ photograph has been widely shared and analyzed, with retired FBI special agent Michael Harrigan stating that it appears to show the bullet’s path. The photographer also described Trump’s initial reaction, saying, “All of a sudden, he got near the edge of the stage and raised up his fist in defiance. And I could see the blood on his face and that defiance went away like in a split second. He became very serious. I thought he looked very pale.”

Despite the traumatic nature of the event, Mills’ professionalism and quick thinking allowed him to capture a historic and crucial moment. His decades of experience covering the White House proved invaluable in this unprecedented situation.
