Double blow: Councillor Ramchandra left BJP in just four days, AAP went to court to postpone ward committee elections

With the announcement of the elections of the Commissioner of Delhi Municipal Corporation, Ward Committee and Powerful Committee Standing, it was the turn of Aam Aadmi Party in the game of checkmate. BJP got a double jolt due to the bounce back of AAP. Councillor Ramchandra from Narela had joined BJP along with 4 companions, but on the fifth day itself, Manish Sisodia made BJP’s ‘Ram’ wear the turban of Aam Aadmi Party.

Sources associated with AAP say that some more councillors who had left the party are being contacted and some of them may return home in a day or two. The second setback came when Aam Aadmi Party councillors went to court to get the ward committee elections rescheduled. Aam Aadmi Party councillor from Dakshinpuri Prem Chauhan filed a petition in the High Court in this regard and wrote a letter to Delhi Commissioner Ashwini Kumar.

A day after the announcement of the most powerful Standing Committee and Ward Committee elections, Aam Aadmi Party councillors wrote a letter to the commissioner asking him to reschedule the elections. Actually, the Standing and Ward Committee elections have already been announced. The last date for nomination is 30 August and elections are certain on 4 September. In such a situation, only 1 day’s time was given which is not right in any way. Councillor Prem Chauhan from Dakshinpuri cited ill health in a letter to the commissioner and wrote in the letter that giving only 1 day is a black chapter in democracy.

Why did Aam Aadmi Party take this step?
In fact, after the Lieutenant Governor nominated 10 councillors of BJP, BJP had majority in only 5 zones out of 12 zones of MCD, but 4 days ago, 5 councillors of Aam Aadmi Party joined BJP. After this, BJP was ahead in 7 zones. Even after the comeback of AAP councillor Ram Chandra who had joined BJP, BJP has majority in only 7 zones, so if elections are held, not only will AAP councillors be in danger of breaking away, but BJP will also capture the most powerful committee standing, so if the decision is taken to postpone the elections, AAP will get time for damage control. Aam Aadmi Party is in majority only in 5 zones.

MCD opposition leader’s counter-attack
Leader of Opposition and former Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh has accused Aam Aadmi Party of adopting different electoral tactics to stop the formation of permanent committee in order to stop the development of Delhi. First, AAP went to High Court on the issue of BJP’s three members winning the permanent committee, but it was defeated there too. After this, the aldermen appointed by the Lieutenant Governor were challenged in the Supreme Court, even then the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor. Whenever all avenues were closed, the Mayor was forced to order elections for ward committees and permanent committee.

Now that the corporation secretary has announced the dates for the ward committee elections, the AAP leaders are trying to postpone the elections by using their councillors as pawns. For 18 months, the AAP did not even allow the formation of a permanent committee. Not only this, it also destroyed the sanitation system of Delhi. Now when nominations for the ward committee elections are to be done, the AAP councillors are pretending to be sick. Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said that the BJP will file nominations for its candidates on Friday. The BJP will field its candidates in all 12 zones and will register victory.
