Former U.S. President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

According to eyewitness accounts, gunfire erupted at the event, prompting Secret Service agents to swarm around Trump and quickly escort him to safety. Trump emerged with blood on his right cheek and ear, but defiantly pumped his fist in the air before being ushered into a waiting car.

The shooter was killed at the scene by Secret Service personnel. Authorities have not yet released the shooter’s identity or disclosed the motive behind the attack.

One spectator was killed and two others were critically injured in the incident. The Secret Service and local law enforcement are conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting, which is being treated as an attempted assassination of the former president.

Despite the harrowing experience, Trump appeared unshaken, with a source telling reporters that he was “safe” following the attack. The former president’s campaign also confirmed that he was unharmed.

The shooting occurred just four months before the November 5th presidential election, where Trump is set to face off against Democratic incumbent Joe Biden. The incident is likely to further inflame the already tense political climate in the United States.
