Miami Dolphins Wide receiver Tyreek Hill celebrated a third-quarter touchdown by pretending to be handcuffed — after being detained by police before Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In video filmed by a fan, Hill can be seen on the sideline with his hands behind his back as fellow Dolphins wide receiver Jalen Weddle comes up from behind and grabs his hands.
The Dolphins would defeat the Jaguars 20 to 17. Hill finished the game with one touchdown, seven receptions and 130 receiving yards.
His conversation with the police hours before the touchdown was also caught on camera.
In a video circulating on social media, viewers can see a handcuffed Hill interacting with police officers on the side of the road. At a certain point, an officer is seen forcibly taking Hill face-first to the ground.
Another video shared by former NFL player and sports commentator Robert Griffin III shows Hill being cuffed by police on his stomach.
The team took to X to deal with the situation.
“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about a block from the stadium and was briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped by to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have arrived safely at the stadium and will be available for today’s game,” his message read.
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels also released a statement.
“We are aware of the recent detention of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by officers of the Miami-Dade Police Department,” Said by Daniels X. “I have requested an immediate review of all the details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
ESPN reported Hill was pulled over for speeding before getting into a “verbal altercation with police.”
In a side interview Speaking to Sports Network before the game, Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the ordeal “heartbreaking” and “mind-blowing”. “We will look into this,” he added.
Hill has yet to comment.
