‘Do not post anything that will…’, Bengal CM Mamata appeals to leaders

After the ongoing violence and coup in Bangladesh, there is a high alert situation in India as well. On one hand, there are chances that former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and left the country, is coming to India, while on the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also given a statement on the violent protests and formation of an interim government in the neighboring country. She has advised people to avoid rumors and appealed to the leaders not to make provocative comments.

What did CM Mamata Banerjee say?
Mamata Banerjee said on Monday, ‘I appeal to the people of Bengal to maintain peace. Do not pay attention to any kind of rumors. This is a matter between two countries, whatever decision the central government takes, we will support it.’ The West Bengal CM further said, ‘The Government of India will decide how to work on this (Bangladesh) issue. I appeal to the leaders of all political parties to avoid making provocative comments, which can disturb the peace in Bengal or the country.’ She said, ‘Do not post anything that spoils the communal harmony here.’

Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh on Monday broke into Sheikh Hasina’s official residence in the capital Dhaka and vandalised it. The protesters smashed the statue of her father Mujiburahman with hammers and set fire to her party offices. 76-year-old Hasina has resigned amid massive protests against her government.

Why did violence erupt in Bangladesh?

The protests, which began last month with demands for the abolition of a quota system that reserves 30% of government jobs for families of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971, later turned into anti-government demonstrations. Jubilant crowds took to the streets across the country to celebrate their victory after army chief Gen Waqar-uz-Zaman announced Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

Sheikh Hasina’s resignation ended her 15 years in power. Thousands of protesters violated a military curfew and stormed her official residence. Videos on social media showed protesters climbing a statue of Sheikh Mujiburahman, the hero of the 1971 Liberation War and Sheikh Hasina’s father, in Dhaka and smashing it with hammers.
