Dhaka’s new government is annoyed with 15 August! May cancel public holiday, will not celebrate this day

Events have changed rapidly in the last few weeks in neighboring country Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned after the coup, is currently in India. A new interim government has been formed in Bangladesh. But in the meantime, many parties have urged the interim government not to celebrate 15 August as a national day of mourning.

Many political parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami met the new head of the Bangladesh government Muhammad Yunus. During this, many issues including conducting fair elections in the country were discussed.

Parties like BNP, Jamaat, Amar Bangladesh Party, Gun Adhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party and National Democratic Movement held separate meetings with Muhammad Yunus. During this, these parties urged the interim government that 15 August should no longer be celebrated as a national mourning day.

Sources present in this meeting said that all the parties believed that celebrating 15th August as a national day of mourning should be stopped now. Also, there is no need for a public holiday on this day. However, no decision has been taken on this yet.

AB Party convener Solaiman Chowdhury, who attended the meeting, said that the National Day of Mourning is against the spirit of the Declaration of Independence. Party member Asadjuman Fuad said that there is no public holiday in these countries in memory of America’s founder Abraham Lincoln and Britain’s Winston Churchill. Similarly, there is no need for a public holiday on August 15 in Bangladesh. We know that the Awami League has tried to turn the month of August into a month of mourning for us, but we have liberated the country. Now there is a need to end the public holiday on this day.

BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who led an eight-member delegation in this meeting, said that we have given this interim government enough time to create a favorable environment for holding fair elections in the country. However, during this time there was no discussion on when the elections should be held.

Sources in the BNP said the party has urged the government’s chief adviser to withdraw all cases filed against its chairperson Khaleda Zia and executive chairman Tariq Rahman.

Why is 15 August a national mourning day in Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, 15th August is celebrated as National Mourning Day every year. The reason for this is that on this day in 1975, Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujiburahman was assassinated along with his family. He was the founder of Bangladesh. On 15th August 1975, army officers surrounded his house from all sides and shot him dead. Since then, National Mourning Day is celebrated on 15th August in Bangladesh.
