Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has been elected as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah will now replace Greg Barclay. After an Indian becomes the ICC boss, India’s dominance in world cricket will increase further. But, this is not the first time this has happened and before this many people have been in the role of ICC chief. Before this many Indians have been ICC President and Chairman.
In such a situation, the question is whether ICC President and Chairman are different posts and which is considered the senior post among the two. So let us know what is the story of both the posts and what is the hierarchy in ICC.
Which Indians have been the ICC Chief?
First of all, Jagmohan Dalmiya from India was the ICC President from 1997 to 2000, after this Sharad Pawar was the ICC Chief from 2010 to 2012. After this, N Srinivasan got the command of ICC, but he was appointed as Chairman and not President. He remained Chairman from 2014-2015 and after this another Indian Shashank Manohar became the Chairman of ICC. Shashank Manohar remained the chairman for a long time and his tenure was from 2015 to 2020. Now Jay Shah has been appointed as ICC Chairman.
Are the posts of President and Chairman different?
Generally speaking, both the President and the Chairman are like the ICC Chief. But, in the history of ICC, both the President and the Chairman have been there and both the posts have played an important role. Let us tell you that earlier the ICC President was considered the ICC Chief, but the post of President existed only from 1989 to 2016.
After this, this post was abolished and then the post of chairman came into existence. In such a situation, both these posts are counted as ICC chief. Earlier the ICC chief was in the role of ICC President and now the ICC Chairman looks after the entire work.
He has been the President and Chairman at the same time
But, there has been a time in the history of ICC when both ICC President and Chairman have been in the Council. Actually, this post came into existence in the year 2014 and Srinivasan was made the first chairman. At that time, Mustafa Kamal was the President of ICC. After this, Zaheer Abbas was the ICC Chief from 2015 to 2016 and during that time Shashank Manohar was the Chairman. In such a situation, from 2014 to 2016, both President and Chairman have been in ICC.
Apart from this, there is also the post of ICC Deputy Chief among the officials of ICC, which has been created since the year 2017. Apart from these posts, there is also the post of ICC Chief Executive and Manu Shahani has been on the post of ICC Chief Executive from 2019 to 2021.
