Cricketer, Chief Justice, MP, businessman… Bangladesh’s rebellious barbaric mob is not leaving anyone’s house alone, looting and arson is happening everywhere

Bangladesh is in turmoil. People are angry and there is a flood on the streets. Everyone is terrified seeing the brutality of the mob. The countries of the world including the neighbours are also worried. The rebel mob is targeting everything from the Prime Minister’s residence to the Parliament and from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to the houses of cricketers, leaders, businessmen. It can be said that the mob in Bangladesh is not sparing anyone and looting and arson is happening everywhere. Everything from schools to traffic has been shut down. Factories have been locked. This mob is now entering homes and attacking. Minority Hindus are also feeling insecure.

A student movement had started in Bangladesh on the issue of reservation and this controversy ended with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (76 years old) leaving the country. Currently, Sheikh Hasina has resigned and has come to India. Sheikh Hasina was in power for 15 consecutive years. This was her fifth term.

Now a new interim government will be formed in Bangladesh soon. President Mohammad Shahabuddin said that the Parliament will be dissolved. He also ordered the release of jailed BNP leader and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Khaleda was under house arrest after being convicted in several cases. The President also held a meeting with leaders of various political parties and other representatives in the presence of the chiefs of the three armies.

Arson in the house of former captain of cricket team

On Monday, a mob set fire to the house of former Bangladesh cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza. Mortaza is also an MP of the ruling Awami League party. He won the general elections held this year for the second consecutive time. He was elected from the Narail-2 Lok Sabha constituency of Khulna Division. According to media reports, after Sheikh Hasina left the country, the protesters reached Mortaza’s house in Narail and started vandalizing it. Later, the house was set on fire. Mortaza took 390 wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs and 54 T20 Internationals in his long cricket career. He has led Bangladesh in 117 matches in all formats. This is the most for his country. After retiring from cricket, he started his political innings in 2018 and joined the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina.

Chief Justice’s house looted

The protesters have also looted the house of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Dhaka. Apart from this, the residence of the Superintendent of Police located in Ramna area has also been vandalized. The mob has also been seen taking away furniture and other valuables from both the residences. No police or security personnel have been seen to protect both the residences. According to the Dhaka Tribune, the mob attacked and vandalized the residence of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh and the SP. When this attack happened, both the houses were empty. The family members had left the house. After their departure, all the security personnel also left the house.

Fire breaks out in businessman’s hotel, 8 people burnt to death

According to the Dhaka Tribune, 8 people died in a fire at a hotel in Jessore on Monday. About 84 people were injured. The owner of the hotel is Jessore district Awami League general secretary and businessman Shahin Chakladar. Deputy Commissioner Abrarul Islam confirmed the fire. Two of the dead were identified as 20-year-old Chayan and 19-year-old Sejan Hussain. An employee of the Jessore General Hospital said that thousands of people were celebrating Sheikh Hasina’s resignation at various places in the city. During this, some people set fire to and vandalized the Jabir Hotel in Chittamore area. The district Awami League office and the houses of three more Awami League leaders in Sharsha and Benapole areas have also been attacked by miscreants.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, thousands of protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka and vandalized it. There was also looting here and people took away valuables. Visuals of the mob attack have surfaced, in which they are seen eating food and resting in the bedroom. After the PM’s residence, the uncontrolled mob entered the Parliament House and vandalized it. Later, the alleged protesters entered the monuments. The famous Sudha Sadan in Dhanmondi area was set on fire and looted. Not only this, the houses of many ministers of the Sheikh Hasina government have also been attacked and party offices have been vandalized.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s statue vandalised

The Dhaka Tribune reported that the protesters also set fire to the district Awami League office and vandalised the house of its president. The official residence of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, ‘Bangabandhu Bhawan’, was vandalised and set on fire. This is a historic building located in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, which Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used as his personal residence. The mob expressed their anger by hollowing out Mujibur Rahman’s statue with the help of a JCB. Mujibur Rahman gave independence to Bangladesh in 1971 and people gave him the title of Father of the Nation. Four years later, in August 1975, Sheikh Mujib was assassinated in this house along with his family members. During this time, his daughter Sheikh Hasina was saved because she was abroad at the time of the incident. This building is a national heritage site and has been converted into the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Sheikh Hasina has also been called the ‘Iron Lady’ of democracy in Bangladesh.

There is complete instability in Bangladesh

The police system of Bangladesh has completely collapsed. There is no police on the streets. Even the Bangladesh Border Guard personnel have been called back. They are not on duty. Only army personnel are deployed on the streets of Bangladesh, but their number is less. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, prisoners broke the jail in Sherpur and 500 prisoners escaped. The army canceled flights at Shahjalal International Airport for 6 hours.

Sheikh Hasina reached India

Here, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed on a C-130 plane at the Indian Air Force airport in Dasna, Ghaziabad at around 6:15 pm on Monday evening. At around 7:30 pm, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Sheikh Hasina. This meeting lasted for about an hour. After that, the Indian government held a high-level meeting late on Monday evening to discuss the situation in Bangladesh.

Within a month, the grip on power became loose

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina’s arch rival Khaleda Zia appealed to the people to maintain peace. Sheikh Hasina’s son and advisor Sajeeb Wazed said that his mother has left the country for her safety and she will never return to politics. Sheikh Hasina was sworn in as Prime Minister on January 11 after winning a huge majority in the controversial general elections. Till a month ago, Sheikh Hasina’s strong grip on power was seen, but in the last few days this grip has completely loosened and in the last few hours, an atmosphere of chaos has been created in Bangladesh. What will happen next is not very clear yet. Student organizations have given 24 hours to decide the outline of the interim government.

How did the situation worsen

There was a demand for the resignation of Sheikh Hasina in various parts of Bangladesh on Sunday. Meanwhile, there was a clash between the protesters and the ruling Awami League supporters. At least 94 people were killed in the violence on August 4. 13 policemen also died in the mob attack. This clash happened a few days after violent clashes between the police and mostly student protesters. At least 300 people have been killed in the country within a fortnight. This movement started from universities and colleges and reached every corner of the country. Opposition parties also came out on the streets. The government tried to end these protests strictly. Bullets were fired. The army came out on the streets, but the movement did not stop. Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country by boarding an army helicopter from the Prime Minister’s residence in Dhaka at 2:30 pm on Monday.

Later, the President addressed the nation and said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has submitted her resignation to him today and he has accepted it. The President said, it has been decided to dissolve the Parliament and form an interim government as soon as possible. The army will also take steps to normalise the current chaotic situation. The interim government will hold general elections as soon as possible.

Order to release Khaleda Zia

He said the meeting also unanimously decided to release Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who is under house arrest after being convicted in several cases. President Shahabuddin also ordered the release of all students arrested during the protests. He said the families of the victims of the anti-discrimination student movement will be compensated and all necessary help will be provided for the treatment of the injured. He urged political parties to normalise the law and order situation in the country and stop activities like looting.

President appeals for peace

He said, I am instructing the armed forces to take strict measures to protect the lives and properties of the people and state properties. I call upon everyone to come forward to ensure communal harmony, safety of minorities and protect government property. Those involved in murder and violence will be brought to justice through a fair investigation. He said that all the offices and courts of the country will open from Tuesday.
