Tech billionaire Elon Musk has formally endorsed former President Donald Trump just minutes after a shooting incident at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The shooting occurred during Trump’s speech on Saturday, with reports indicating that multiple gunshots were fired, leaving the former president injured. Trump was rushed off the stage by Secret Service agents, with visible blood on the side of his face.

In the immediate aftermath, Musk took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his support for Trump. “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote, drawing parallels between Trump and former President Theodore Roosevelt, who also endured an assassination attempt while campaigning.

Musk’s endorsement comes after reports that he had made a significant donation to a pro-Trump super PAC, America PAC, though the exact amount remains undisclosed. Other high-profile Republican donors, such as hedge fund managers Ken Griffin and Paul Singer, have also reportedly held discussions with Trump regarding financial support for his 2024 campaign.

The shooting incident has raised concerns about political violence and its impact on the democratic process. Ian Bremmer, the president of the Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy, condemned the violence, drawing comparisons to the January 6th unrest at the U.S. Capitol.

In his first public statement following the attack, Trump described the experience, saying he “heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin” of his upper right ear. The former president added that “much bleeding took place” and that he “realized then what was happening.”

Despite the incident, Trump appeared defiant, raising his fist as he was escorted away by Secret Service agents. The shooter, whose identity and motive remain unknown, was killed at the scene.

Musk’s endorsement of Trump, coming so soon after the shooting, is likely to further polarize the political landscape and fuel ongoing debates about the role of money in U.S. elections. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing American democracy.
