One person has died following a boat crash in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

A frantic search was underway on Monday night after a small boat without life jackets hit the jetty, leaving three unaccounted for and missing.

Due to the high speed impact, the boat broke into pieces and its passengers were trapped in the water.

The group is believed to have consisted of eight to nine men and women in their mid-twenties.

Two men are still missing, while all other passengers are Treatment for their injuries.

The North Madison Volunteer Fire Company described the situation as a “mass casualty incident,” a term used when emergency resources are overwhelmed by the scale of a disaster.

The accident prompted a massive response from local and state agencies.

Rescue efforts included the Guilford Dive Team, various boats, personnel and ambulances from nearby towns.

The Coast Guard and Lifestar, an air ambulance service, also deployed helicopters to assist in the search.

Old Saybrook, located about 30 miles east New HavenKnown for its picturesque beaches, the crash was particularly traumatic for the local community.

As the search continues, the local community has expressed increasing concern for the missing people given the dangerous conditions on the water and the absence of life jackets.

The search was suspended overnight and will resume this morning.
