Clash between sand mafias at midnight in Kolkata, bullets fired, one arrested

There was a shootout over sand trading at Babu Ghat in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, last night. Sources claim that a sand trader named Ajit Roy and his men were present with a truck loaded with sand. At that time, Asif Ali, a notorious promoter of Topsia area, arrived with his gang and started bargaining at around 1:30 am.

It is alleged that there was a heated argument between the two groups over the price of sand. During this, promoter Asif Ali allegedly opened fire to scare the traders. Sources claim that a driver of sand trader Ajit Roy was shot in the leg. After the incident, accused Asif Ali managed to escape from the spot, but a member of Asif’s gang was caught by the crowd.

The Kolkata Police force immediately reached the spot and arrested an injured member of the notorious promoter Asif Ali’s gang. The police also rushed businessman Ajit Roy and his driver to SSKM Hospital for treatment. His driver has been admitted to SSKM Hospital after suffering from bullet injuries. A case has been registered against the accused promoter Asif Ali and his gang at Maidan police station. The police are conducting raids to arrest them.

The firing incident took place on Strand Road in front of Baje Kadamtala Ghat at around 2 am last night. Initial investigation has revealed that there was a dispute over fixing the price of a truck loaded with sand. Through a telephone conversation, the price of the truck was first fixed at Rs 33,000.

According to the information received, the complainant drove the truck to Kohinoor Market, Kareya. There, the main account holder Tinku told the truck driver that he would pay only Rs 28000 for it and asked the driver to unload the truck, but on the instructions of the complainant over the phone, the driver returned to Babughat. Soon Tinku reached Babughat with his 3/4 companions Arif, Asif, Danish and after a heated argument, everyone got into a fight.

According to police sources, after being cornered by other truck drivers, Tinku allegedly fired four rounds and fled from the spot. However, Asif and Areef were caught. A case has been registered at Maidan police station under sections 118(1)109/3(5) BNS and 25/27 Arms Act.
