Champions Trophy 2025 Update: Pakistan pleaded for India’s participation in the Champions Trophy, pleaded before the ICC, said- convince BCCI

The suspense continues over the Indian team going to the neighboring country for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan next year. If initial reports are to be believed, India can play in the Champions Trophy at another venue in Sri Lanka or UAE under the hybrid model. At the same time, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now pleaded with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in this entire matter and has urged to persuade the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to a PTI report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has left the task to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to convince the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to send its team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in the first quarter of next year.

A PCB source said that the budget for the event was approved in the recent ICC meeting in Colombo, but the schedule and format have not been discussed. The source told PTI, ‘PCB has now done what was expected of it as the host of the Champions Trophy, it has submitted the draft schedule and format for the ICC Champions Trophy. It has also submitted the budget for the event.’

The source further said, ‘Now it depends on the ICC how quickly it circulates, discusses and gives a final outline of the Champions Trophy event. In the draft schedule, the PCB has suggested hosting all India’s matches in Lahore, including the semi-finals (if India qualifies) and the final.’

Another source confirmed that PCB has submitted all its documents to ICC. This source said- PCB has given information to ICC in writing about tax, venue selection, approval from its government to host the Indian team in Pakistan.

The PCB had expressed interest in hosting the Champions Trophy in 2021, when Ehsan Mani was the chairman of the board. The hosting rights were awarded by the ICC in 2022, after which documents were submitted to finalise the hosting when Rameez Raja was the chairman of the PCB.

PCB and BCCI meeting has not taken place yet
PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi did not have any formal meeting with BCCI secretary Jay Shah or other BCCI officials at the ICC meetings, but the talks are said to be cordial. The ICC will also have to get confirmation from the BCCI about the Indian team’s visit to Pakistan. The ICC has included supplementary expenses in its tournament budget to see where the Indian team may have to play matches outside Pakistan.

BCCI said the decision to play in Pakistan will be taken by the government
On the other hand, the BCCI has ensured that the decision on playing in Pakistan will be taken by the Government of India. During the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, India played its games in Sri Lanka on the basis of a ‘hybrid model’. According to the draft schedule, all of India’s matches, including the possible semi-finals and final, are to be played in Lahore.

The key India vs Pakistan match is scheduled for March 1. The PCB has completed all its duties as hosts, including submitting a draft schedule and budget and providing detailed documentation to the ICC. It is now up to the ICC to finalise the arrangements for the event and ensure India’s participation.
