CBI’s letter regarding Kolkata rape and murder case goes viral, investigating agency calls it fake

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday debunked a fake letter viral on social media regarding the investigation into the rape and murder case of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The letter, which is being widely circulated on social media, is signed by a person named Dr Akash Nag.

The official statement issued by the CBI said, “A fake letter in the name of Dr. Akash Nag is going viral, in which the person has described himself as DIG, Joint Director, Crime Branch, Kolkata. The letter is addressed to the Union Home Secretary under the official banner “Central Bureau of Investigation, Office of Deputy Inspector General, Anti-Corruption Branch, Kolkata”, which is being circulated on social media through WhatsApp etc. This letter is regarding the case related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor of RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata.

Further, the CBI informed that the matter is being investigated by the CBI headquarters in Delhi and the contents of the letter are fake. It added, “It is clarified that the said letter is fake. The matter is being investigated by CBI Headquarters, Delhi. Further, there is no officer in the CBI by the name and designation of Dr. Akash Nag, DIG, Joint Director, Crime Branch, ACB, Kolkata. The contents of the said letter are false and hence are strongly denied.

The CBI said in its statement that the general public and all stakeholders are advised to ignore the said letter or any similar mischievous communication. It is reiterated that the CBI is investigating the matter following all standard procedures and in a completely professional manner.
