British tycoon Mike Lynch’s body found in wreckage of sunken boat in Italy, daughter still missing

A luxury boat sank in a severe sea storm in Sicily, Italy late on Monday night. One person died and six people went missing. The missing people also included British tech giant Mike Lynch and his daughter. A source associated with the rescue operation said that Mike Lynch’s body was recovered from the wreckage of his boat on Thursday.

The source said Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing. The bodies of four other people missing after the boat capsized were also recovered from the boat on Wednesday. The Italian coast guard said in a statement that the British-flagged ‘Bayesian’ was a 56-meter-long (184 feet) sailboat carrying 22 people.

15 people were saved

The boat was standing on the shore near the Porticello port. Meanwhile, a severe storm came in the sea and the boat sank. Eyewitnesses said that the boat disappeared under the waves. Fifteen people survived before sinking, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Backares, who was the owner of the boat, and a one-year-old girl.

Who was Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, was one of Britain’s best-known tech entrepreneurs. He built the country’s biggest software firm Autonomy from his groundbreaking research at Cambridge University. He was known as ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’. He sold the firm to HP for $11 billion in 2011.

However, during this time the US tech giant accused him of fraud. He was extradited from Britain to the US to stand trial on criminal charges. He was acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June, after which he spent more than a year effectively under house arrest.

British, American and Canadian citizens killed

The fire department said that expert rescue workers have been searching inside the sunken boat for the last three days, but the operation is becoming challenging due to the depth and narrow paths. According to Italian media, the dead person was a cook on the boat. While the missing people included British, American and Canadian citizens.
