‘Boop, The ick, Chef’s Kiss…’, new words added to Cambridge dictionary

The Cambridge Dictionary has added more than 3,200 new words and phrases in its new 2024 update, including informal slang words that are spoken online and commonly among young people. ‘Boop’ and ‘the ick’ are two such slang words that have been formally added to the dictionary.

  • The word ‘boop’ is usually used in a humorous way. This word means touching the nose of a person or animal, it can usually be seen as a liking, as if in a funny way.
  • The term ‘the ick’ means “the sudden feeling that you dislike something or that you are no longer attracted to someone or something because of something that someone did.”
  • ‘Chef’s kiss’ has been added to the dictionary as a phrase. It is used to describe an action such as putting your fingers and thumb together, kissing them, then pulling your hand away from your lips – to show that something or someone feels perfect to you.

What other words were added to the Cambridge dictionary?

Other slang words and abbreviations have also been recognised in the Cambridge dictionary, such as ‘IYKYK’ which stands for – ‘If You Know You Know.’ Apart from these, words like ‘Face Journey’ have also been added – which shows the expressions on a person’s face, indicating different emotions.

How are words added to the dictionary?

The Cambridge Dictionary team uses the Cambridge English Corpus, a collection of over 2 billion written and spoken English words, to gather evidence of which words are commonly used by people to coin new words and phrases. Many words are also taken from the world of online gaming, such as ‘Backread’, ‘Speedrun’, and ‘Side Quest’
