25 Years of Kargil War: This is the story of those brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country in the Kargil war without caring for their own lives. 25 years ago, the brave sons of India defeated the plans of Pakistani soldiers and hoisted the tricolor on the peaks of Kargil. That day of 26 July 1999 was a day of pride for every Indian. Since then, we celebrate this proud day as Kargil Vijay Diwas. This date of 26 July is also historic because Operation Vijay was also successful on this day. In this operation, Indian soldiers recaptured those areas of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir which were captured by Pakistani soldiers and terrorists by infiltrating.

The Kargil war started with the war between India and Pakistan in 1971. After this war, East Pakistan emerged as an independent country which was called Bangladesh. This fight between the two countries did not end here. The fight between the two countries continued to establish their rights on the Siachen Glacier. Due to which this enmity between the two countries continued further. To put an end to this enmity peacefully, an agreement named “Lahore Declaration” was signed between the two countries in February 1999, which was signed by both the countries.

But despite this, in defiance of the agreement, Pakistani soldiers and terrorists infiltrated and captured India’s Line of Control (LoC) in northern Kargil of Jammu and Kashmir. Indian soldiers came to know about this infiltration in May 1999, after which the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay. Indian soldiers stood firm even in the bone-chilling cold of the mountains and this operation continued from May 1999 to July 1999 and in these three months of fighting, about 490 military officers and soldiers of our country were martyred. After a 3-month long fight and losing many soldiers, on 26 July 1999, the Indian Army succeeded in driving away the Pakistani army and terrorists. In this way Operation Vijay was successful and the tricolor was hoisted on the peak of Kargil.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to remember and honour the sacrifices of all the army soldiers and officers who were martyred in the Kargil war on 26 July 1999. People from every corner of India joined the Kargil war and came forward in support of the soldiers. Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of the unity and patriotism of the country. Along with this, the heroic story of the soldiers martyred in the Kargil war is an inspiration for the countrymen, which awakens the feeling of duty towards the country in the countrymen.
