‘Blind date, strange voice mail and then meeting’, Kamala Harris’s husband tells his love story

Douglas Emhoff is currently in the US campaigning for his wife and presidential candidate Kamala Harris. He appeared on the Democratic National Convention stage on Tuesday and shared his personal stories. Emhoff talked about how much he loved his job as a lawyer and how he became a father to his son Cole and daughter Ella.

Emhoff said that after the divorce, an unexpected event happened in 2013, when he got a chance to meet Kamala Harris on a blind date. He said, “In 2013, I walked into a controversial client meeting. When the meeting was over, the happy customer offered to set me up on a blind date, and that’s how I got Kamala Harris’s phone number.”

When I called at 8:30 in the morning

Emhoff, 59, said he sent Kamala Harris a long and, he said, strange voicemail, which she listens to every year on their anniversary. Kamala Harris is 59 years old and is currently contesting the US presidential election. He said, “No one in history would have ever suggested calling at 8:30 in the morning, and yet, that’s what I did.”

He said, “I remember trying to grab the words out of the air and put them back in my mouth. After a few minutes, I disconnected the call. Kamala has saved that voicemail and plays it to me every year.”

When Kamala Harris called

Douglas said that Kamala, who is busy with work, was waiting for a contractor at her apartment that day. Emhoff said, “At the same time, I had lunch at my desk, which is not normal for a busy lawyer.” He said, “Then Kamala called me back. We talked for an hour. We laughed. You know, I love that laugh. Maybe it was our first date, or that Saturday when I woke her up and said ‘Buckle up, I’m a terrible driver.'”

Kamala was described as a “joyful warrior”

Emhoff called his wife a “joyful warrior” and a loving co-responsible for their children. He said that he and Harris are part of a joint family and when his children started calling Harris ‘Momla’, he knew that everything will be fine. Emhoff said, “Kamala is doing for her country what she has always done for her loved ones.” The special thing is that next week she will be nominated by the Democratic Party, which will be their tenth anniversary.
