BJP sources said she may join the BJP and get re-elected to the vacant seat with the help of the party’s increased strength in the Assembly.

Without naming the BJP, Chief Whip of the Opposition in the state assembly Pramila Malik said that Mohanta’s resignation is part of a conspiracy hatched by a national party. A national party hatched a conspiracy to increase its strength in the Rajya Sabha. Mamata Mohanta was sent to the Rajya Sabha by Naveen Patnaik to give representation to Mayurbhanj and the Mohanta community, she has betrayed her community, the state and the people of Mayurbhanj. She rejected Mohanta’s allegations of being sidelined in the party. Pramila Malik said that Mohanta should remember what she did during the elections.

Let us tell you that at present BJP has 78 members in the assembly, while the opposition BJD has 51 seats, Congress has 14 seats, three independents and one CPI(M). There are 10 Rajya Sabha seats in the state, out of which 8 are with BJD, while one is with BJP.

BJP sources claimed that Mohanta is likely to be re-nominated to the seat vacated by him, but there are indications that the names of party state president Manmohan Samal and senior leaders Dilip Ray and Samir Dash are also being considered. All of them lost the recently concluded assembly elections but played a key role in bringing the BJP to power in the state.
