In its verdict, the court said that the motive behind killing his wife was the birth of a second girl child and that was the reason why the accused also attempted to kill his first daughter. Hence, awarding death penalty for such a “rarest of rare crime” would serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar heinous acts.

The court has also sentenced Sanjit to life imprisonment. Both the sentences will run simultaneously subject to modification, change, remission or pardon given to the convict. Commenting on this tragic incident that happened with a six-year-old girl, the court said that the girl, who is not even allowed to see such horrors in films by the Indian legal system, had to see all this with her own eyes.

The court said that the six-year-old girl, who would have proudly sung ‘Vande Mataram’, was brutally strangled by her own father, the girl who would have probably enjoyed watching ‘Chhota Bheem’ and ‘Doraemon’, had to witness the gruesome murder of her mother by her father. The court said that the deep pain of the victim child, who had to witness the murder of her mother by her father, cannot be ignored.

The court said that her home, which was her safe haven, has now become the scene of unimaginable horrors, shattering her sense of security and confidence. The court also directed that a copy of the judgment be made available to the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA), Khurda, to consider compensation for the minor daughters of the deceased.
