Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three new varieties of rice developed by Odisha scientists to the nation last Sunday. Scientists of the National Rice Research Institute (NRRI) are very happy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi released three new varieties of rice developed by them. These include rice, sugarcane and oilseed crops.

PM Modi gave a gift to the farmers

The country’s premier rice research institute had identified and released eight new rice varieties last year, out of which the Prime Minister selected three important varieties which were bio-fortified, high yielding and climate resilient. NRRI Director A K Nayak said that out of the eight recently released varieties, the Prime Minister dedicated CR Dhan 108, CR Dhan 810 and CR Dhan 416 to the nation for their rich nutritional values, climate resilient and high yielding characteristics.

CR Dhan 108 variety of rice is suitable for the drought-prone conditions of eastern India. The average productivity of this variety is 32 quintals per hectare. The director of NRRI said that the maturity period of this variety is 112 days and its grains are medium thin and this will increase the income of farmers. Similarly, CR Dhan 810 is a variety that has the capacity to absorb water and can be easily planted in the flood-prone low-lying areas of Odisha, West Bengal and Assam.

Apart from this, CR Dhan 416 is suitable for saline soil of West Bengal, Maharashtra and Gujarat, whose average productivity is 43 quintals per hectare and maturity period is 125 days. The director of NRRI said that the seeds of these three new varieties of rice have the ability to give good yield even in bad weather conditions.

With the eight new varieties of rice developed recently by NRRI, this institute has developed 188 varieties of rice so far in its 78 years of existence, which are not only high yielding but are also suitable for different systems of the country. Let us tell you that earlier NRRI was named Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI). It was established in April 1946 and is currently under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
