In a fiery speech to the NAACP’s national convention in Las Vegas, President Joe Biden forcefully criticized his Republican rival Donald Trump, accusing him of “lying like hell” about his record on issues affecting the Black community.
Biden’s remarks came just three days after a shooting attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, which the president described as a “tense moment” for the country. However, he did not hold back in his attacks on the former president.
Condemning Political Violence, But Criticizing Trump
While Biden began by denouncing political violence and calling for unity, he quickly pivoted to launching blistering attacks on Trump’s policies and rhetoric. He accused the former president of failing to stand up against violence perpetrated against the Black community, citing the murder of George Floyd and the events of January 6th.
“You understand, if you’re going to talk about standing against violence, you must stand against all violence,” Biden said. “You must stand against the violence and intimidation of white supremacy.”
Highlighting Economic Progress, Accusing Trump of Lying
Biden touted the economic progress made under his administration, including record-low Black unemployment and growth in Black small businesses. He directly accused Trump of “lying like hell” about these achievements.
“Black unemployment hit a record low under the Biden-Harris administration,” Biden said, drawing cheers from the audience.
Criticizing Trump’s Rhetoric on “Black Jobs”
Biden also seized on a controversial comment Trump made during a recent presidential debate, where he referred to “Black jobs” being taken by immigrants. The president fired back, saying, “Folks, I know what a Black job is: it’s the Vice President of the United States! I know what a Black job is: the first Black president in American history, Barack Obama!”

Tying Trump and Allies to Project 2025
Biden also sought to tie Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, to the Republican Party’s “Project 2025” agenda, which the president claimed would “deny your freedom: the freedom to vote, have your vote counted” and “impose a nationwide ban on abortion.”
Hinting at Kamala Harris’ Future Role
In a notable moment, Biden hinted at a greater future role for Vice President Kamala Harris, saying, “And by the way, she’s not only a great vice president, she could be president of the United States.”
Overall, Biden’s speech struck a delicate balance, condemning political violence while unrelentingly criticizing Trump and his allies on a range of issues important to the Black community.
