Best Agriculture award: The 15th Agriculture Leadership Awards Committee has announced that Maharashtra has won the Best Agriculture State Award for 2024. The announcement was made by the 15th Agriculture Leadership Awards Committee headed by Justice P Sathasivam, former Chief Justice of India and Governor of Kerala. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde received the award at a ceremony in New Delhi on 10 July 2024.

Innovative Agricultural Practices of Maharashtra

Maharashtra has been selected for this award for its innovative agriculture and rural initiatives. The award recognizes the innovative policies and high-impact developmental initiatives of the Maharashtra government, which have led to increased agricultural and rural prosperity in the state. The award recognized Maharashtra’s sustainable development policies focusing on environmental protection and food security. The Maharashtra government has launched the country’s largest bamboo mission in 21 lakh hectares. In the recently presented budget, the Maharashtra government has announced a plan to set up a green belt spanning 1.20 lakh acres in Nandurbar district in collaboration with the central and state governments. The Maharashtra government has also set a target to increase irrigation capacity in about 17 lakh hectares through the implementation of 123 projects.

Agricultural Leadership Award

The annual Agriculture Leadership Award was instituted in 2008 by Agriculture Today magazine. The award recognises the contribution of various stakeholders—government, individuals and organisations—who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in agriculture. Earlier, current Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, etc. have won the award.

Among the states of India, Maharashtra has the largest economy. Maharashtra contributes 12.92% to the country’s GDP. The state’s per capita income is higher than the national average. Agriculture and allied activities contribute about 12.1 percent to the state’s gross state value addition.
