‘Being a Muslim…’, uproar over PAK swimmer’s ‘short’ clothes at Paris Olympics, Pakistanis clash

Pakistani swimmer Jahanara Nabi may have missed out on winning a medal at the Paris Olympics, but her brilliant performance is being praised a lot. Meanwhile, some people in Pakistan are not giving up their conservative mindset and their focus is not on Nabi’s game but on her clothes. They are expressing displeasure over Nabi’s swimming costume, citing Islam.

20-year-old Nabi made a wild card entry in Paris Olympics 2024 but she could not win a medal. But Pakistani celebrities are praising her for her excellent performance.

Pakistani singer and actor Ali Zafar wrote on social media site X, ‘Go ahead Jahanara Nabi… proud of your great performance in Paris Olympics 2024. I would like to tell all the parents that to see your child truly happy, encourage them to fulfill their dreams. Understand their passion instead of imposing your dreams on them.’

On this tweet of Toheed, some men of Pakistan are trolling her and writing that how can wearing such less clothes be celebrated. One user criticized Nabi for the swimming costume and said that look at the female swimmers of Arab countries who are wearing swim suits according to their culture.

Targeting Toheed, a user wrote, ‘If you are celebrating this publicly, then we can understand how you are in your personal life. If you are praising the Prophet for breaking the shackles, then I would ask you to share similar pictures of your mother, daughter and wife too.’

Meanwhile, another Pakistani user wrote, ‘Whenever women wear less clothes, it becomes a reason for celebration for people like you.’

Another user from Pakistan wrote on x, “Women’s participation in every field is a big contribution to our society but wearing short clothes is a matter of great shame for us and as a Muslim this cannot be accepted. Women’s participation is important but only when they are dressed properly.”

Jahanara made her Olympic debut at the age of 20

Jahanara participated in the 200m freestyle event at the Paris Olympics. She started her journey as a professional swimmer at the age of 12 and represented Pakistan at the international level.

At the age of 15, she went to Thailand for training. In an interview with Aaj TV before the Olympics, Nabi said that criticism has been a part of her life as a Pakistani female athlete. She said that she focuses on those who encourage her to move forward and is moving forward by ignoring the criticism.

Only 7 athletes from Pakistan reached the Olympics

An 18-member team from Pakistan has participated in the Olympics, which includes only 7 athletes. 11 officials along with 7 athletes from Pakistan have reached Paris for the Olympics. Pakistan also had to face embarrassment during the opening ceremony due to such a small number of athletes.

Seeing the 18-member Pakistani team during the ceremony, a commentator said, ‘Pakistan is a country with a population of more than 24 crores but only 7 athletes are participating in the Olympics.’

This video of the comment on Pakistan at the opening ceremony went viral on social media and Pakistanis called it shameful. Pakistani journalist Basit Subhani shared the video of the event on social media site X and wrote, ‘Shameful… Who is responsible for this?’

Pakistani journalist Farid Khan also wrote on X, ‘This is extremely shameful and very sad. Who is responsible for this?’
