‘Be cautious! Some people…’, Jagdeep Dhankhar criticized the statements of Salman Khurshid and Mani Shankar Aiyar

Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar warned the country against the efforts of ‘anti-national forces’ who are trying to spread rumours that the recent events in neighbouring country Bangladesh will be repeated in India too. Without naming anyone, Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed deep concern over how some people are quick to find similarities between India and its neighbouring countries. He termed it an attempt to mislead.

“Be alert! Some people are trying to spread the story that what happened in our neighbourhood will happen in India too, this is extremely worrying,” Dhankhar said at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur on Saturday.

The Vice President said, “A citizen of this country who has been a Member of Parliament and another who has spent a considerable period in the Foreign Service is quick to say that what happened in the neighbourhood will happen in India too!”

What did Salman Khurshid and Mani Shankar Aiyar say?

Dhankhar’s comment is being seen as a response to Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Mani Shankar Aiyar, who had compared the political situations of India and Bangladesh with India. Salman Khurshid had said that despite the normal situation in India, incidents like Bangladesh can happen here too. Former diplomat and Union Minister Aiyar had also similarly compared India with Bangladesh.

The Vice President also stressed the importance of national interest, saying that it cannot be measured. It is the top priority, the only priority and we are committed to giving priority to the nation before anything else.

Dhankhar’s remarks come at a time when Bangladesh is facing political turmoil. Faced with student-led protests, ‘Iron Lady’ Sheikh Hasina fled the country after resigning as Prime Minister and took refuge in India.

An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken power in Bangladesh. He has given priority to the restoration of “law and order” after clashes between protesters and Hasina’s supporters.

Dhankhar also commented on the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in June 1975. He described it as the “most cruel dark period” after independence.
