  • Mamata Banerjee said- ‘I assure full support to those residents of Bengal’
  • ‘Whose relatives are stranded in violence-torn Bangladesh’
  • ‘If helpless people (from Bangladesh) knock at Bengal’s door, we will give them shelter’

The Trinamool Congress supremo was addressing a massive ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally of the Trinamool Congress amid heavy rains in Kolkata. She said, “I cannot say anything about Bangladesh as it is a separate country. The Indian government will talk about it. But if helpless people (from Bangladesh) knock at the door of Bengal, we will give them shelter. There is a resolution of the United Nations. Neighbours will respect refugees.”

She said, ‘I assure full support to those residents of Bengal whose relatives are stranded in violence-torn Bangladesh.’ Bangladesh authorities have imposed a strict curfew across the country and army personnel have patrolled parts of the capital Dhaka. This happened when violence broke out in parts of the country over the allocation of government jobs, leaving several people dead and hundreds injured.

Mamata Banerjee also praised Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was present at the event, for his party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. She said, “The government at the Centre will not last long. It is not a stable government and will fall soon.”

The Trinamool Congress chief said, ‘The ‘game’ you have played in UP should have led to the resignation of the BJP government (in UP), but the shameless government is remaining in power by misusing agencies and other means.’

‘That government is not going to last, that government is going to fall’

At the rally, Akhilesh Yadav said, ‘The people of Bengal have fought the BJP and left them behind, the same happened in Uttar Pradesh… Those sitting in the government in Delhi are in power for a few days only. ‘Woh sarkar chalne wali nahi hai, woh sarkar girne wali hai’ (That government is not going to last long, it will fall soon.)

‘Don’t do injustice to people and don’t tolerate it’

Referring to recent incidents of mob attacks in the state, the Chief Minister said, “Do not do injustice to the people nor tolerate it, we will not spare even Trinamool Congress members if found guilty.” She said, “I want party workers to become friends of the people. I want to tell the municipal and panchayat representatives, MLAs and MPs to ensure that we do not receive any complaint against them.” The Chief Minister said, “If we receive any complaint, we will take appropriate action. Everyone knows that if any injustice is done, we do not spare even Trinamool Congress people.”
