The Bangladesh government has decided to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami party on Tuesday. The government has taken this step after the violent protests by students over quota in government jobs. At least 150 people were killed in these protests. The government has accused this fundamentalist party of taking advantage of the movement and instigating people to violence.

The decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami comes a day after a 14-party coalition led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina passed a resolution banning the party. Jamaat-e-Islami is an ally of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh National Party (BNP).

Law Minister Anisul Haque said in his office on Tuesday that the decision to ban the Jamaat would be announced tomorrow. He said it would be a “government order”. Jamaat-e-Islami was founded in 1941 during British rule.

Law Minister Anisul Haque claimed that protesting students had told him that they had nothing to do with the violence in the movement. However, there is evidence that Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Camp, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s BNP and Chhatra Dal perpetrated violence in the state.

Obaidul Quader, general secretary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Awami League, said the government would thoroughly examine the legal aspects so that there were no legal loopholes to prevent “this radical group” from joining politics.

Quader said the 14-party alliance for the country has decided to ban Jamaat-Shibir to eliminate anti-national forces. He said Jamaat and BNP used students as “shields” during the agitation.

Let us tell you that violence spread in Bangladesh in July when protests that started in universities and colleges soon turned into a widespread movement against the policies of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government. The situation deteriorated so much that the government had to call the army to pacify the people protesting against the quota. At least 150 people were killed in this violence and several thousand people, including policemen, were injured. The protesters damaged and burned several main government buildings.

Meanwhile, leaders of the 14-party alliance led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a meeting and passed a resolution that Jamaat, which opposed Bangladesh’s 1971 independence, should be banned from politics.

Political sources said Hasina said in the meeting that according to intelligence reports, people of Jamaat-Shibir carried out incidents of arson in the capital and damaged government buildings.

Let us tell you that in 2018, following the decision of the Bangladesh High Court, the Election Commission canceled the registration of Jamaat. After this, Jamaat became ineligible to contest the elections.

Jamaat also has a hand in the attack on Hindus

Let us tell you that Jamaat-e-Islami has also been accused of attacking minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Human rights organization Amnesty International has said in a report that Jamaat-e-Islami and student camps have been continuously targeting Hindus in Bangladesh.

NGOs working in Bangladesh estimate that there have been 3600 attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh from 2013 to 2022. Jamaat-e-Islami has played a role in many of these incidents.
