Bangladesh: After violence, arson and the coup of Hasina government, know what is the situation in the country now, ground report

In Bangladesh, the situation is returning to normal after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government and weeks of violent protests. At the same time, markets are gradually opening in the capital Dhaka and public transport is starting on the roads. It is worth noting that policemen are not seen on the streets of Dhaka. Instead, students are seen engaged in traffic management as volunteers.

The Awami League office in one of the most VIP areas of Dhaka, just a few blocks away from the President’s House, has been burnt to ashes. The Awami Party League headquarters was the first to be attacked by rioters and Sheikh Hasina’s opponents. The marks of arson and violence are still fresh in the present times.

‘Don’t know when schools and colleges will open’

Speaking to India Today, a second-year college student managing traffic at a busy intersection in Dhaka said, “The prime minister has run away and so have the police. Now all of us students are managing the traffic. All schools and colleges are closed and we don’t know when they will open.”

Students are handling the responsibility of traffic management, while the army and NGOs are taking care of the law and order situation. Detachments of army personnel carrying light machine guns (LMG) are deployed in major areas of Dhaka. There is tight security in the area around the airport, many army vehicles are stationed near the entrance gate.

After the fall of the Hasina government, the police stayed away from duty due to security concerns, which led to large-scale looting and riots in the country. Last week, about 76 police stations were set on fire in Bangladesh. Several police officers were also beaten to death in a police station in Sirajganj.
