Ayodhya Gang Rape Case: Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Moid Khan, who was arrested for raping a minor in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, has a long history of criminal activities. But his political influence in the area prevented local governments and law agencies from taking action against him. Moid Khan has been arrested and sent to jail for raping a 12-year-old girl in Ayodhya. This is the first major action against him in 12 years.

Demolition of various properties begins

Following his arrest, authorities have now begun demolishing his various properties. Moeed Khan’s influence had developed over two decades through his connections with powerful figures in the Samajwadi Party. He was particularly close to former Bhadrasa Municipal Council president Mohammed Rashid, whose father Mohammed Ahmed also wielded significant influence.

2012 Durga Puja riots

According to India Today, one of the most important incidents involving Moeed Khan took place on October 24, 2012. A communal riot broke out during a Durga Puja procession in Bhadrasa in which the Hindu procession was attacked and a man named Bhola Gupta was killed. Moeed Khan, along with Mohammad Ahmed, was charged with inciting the riot and murder. Though Moeed was jailed following an FIR, his influence was so strong that nothing happened to him. The Bhadrasa police outpost is said to have operated from his residence. However, locals claimed that the police outpost was not in Moeed’s house but on the land of a close associate.

Took advantage of penetration into power

In 2012, taking advantage of his close relationship with Mohammad Ahmed, Moeed Khan became the Samajwadi Party’s municipal president, a position he still holds. Under Ahmed’s patronage, Moeed began to encroach on government and poor people’s lands. Moeed Khan has six children, four sons and two daughters. Despite his limited education, having only attended a madrasa, Moeed acquired considerable wealth and influence.

Investing relatives’ earnings abroad

A shopping complex with a private bank marked for demolition by the revenue department for illegal occupation of government land also allegedly belonged to one of his relatives living abroad. After Moeed’s recent arrest, several Dalit families have come forward accusing him of usurping their land. The district administration is currently investigating his properties and suspects that Moeed has invested his relatives’ foreign earnings in several properties. Properties in his and his associates’ names are now under the scanner.
