Awami League leaders in trouble! Sheikh Hasina’s advisor sent on remand in murder case

A Dhaka court on Saturday remanded ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s private industry affairs adviser Salman F Rahman, former law minister Anisul Haque, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni and two others on varying terms for questioning in four murder cases.

The Daily Star newspaper quoted a sub-inspector as saying that Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim has passed the remand orders. Apart from the three Awami League leaders, former Chief Whip ASM Feroz and former army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan have also been sent on remand in the murder case.

Awami League leaders on remand

Salman, Anisul and Ziaul have been sent on 10-day remand in two murder cases registered at New Market and Lalbagh police stations. Deepu Moni has been sent on four-day remand in a case registered at Barda police station and Feroz has been sent on seven-day remand in a case registered at Bhatara police station.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India after resigning on August 5 following massive protests against the quota reform system in Bangladesh. Cases have been registered against several officials and ministers of the ousted Hasina-led government.

Awami League workers are being beaten up

Many members of the Awami League party led by Hasina have been in jail since the new interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge on August 8 after the fall of the previous government. Violence continues in Bangladesh even after the coup and reports of assault on Awami League workers are constantly coming.

Sheikh Hasina has also been sued several times. Recently, news came that the Home Department of the interim government has also cancelled all diplomatic passports issued to MPs during Sheikh Hasina’s time. This includes the cancellation of Sheikh Hasina’s passport as well. Let us tell you that diplomatic passport holders get many privileges including visa-free travel to some countries.

Sheikh Hasina is in India

Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 5 after leaving Bangladesh. Still, Sheikh Hasina’s status remains uncertain as she is seeking asylum in Britain or another European country, but no country has approved her yet. If reports are to be believed, Sheikh Hasina’s prolonged stay could create potential diplomatic complications for India.

Especially at a time when Bangladesh has started putting pressure for his extradition. However, experts say that Bangladesh has not yet made a formal extradition request. Even if it is made, India is not bound to accept it.
