Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha Review: Ajay-Tabu’s love story lacks power, in the first half you will start wondering when it will end

When I was asked to watch Ajay Devgan and Tabu’s film, I was the first to raise my hand. And now that I have seen this film, I can say that ‘Dushman the hum hi apne, auros me kahan dum tha!’

In the 90s, when Ajay Devgan and Tabu came together in a film, their chemistry was so intense that it would set the screen on fire. After watching the trailer of ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’, it seemed that this pair is going to do something similar once again. It is impossible that Ajay and Tabu play the role of lovers and your heart will not be happy. And in this new film, both of them were going to play the role of lovers who are tormented by fate, so how could expectations be less. But alas, this pair’s new film has no power.

What is the story of the film?

The film begins with young Krishna (Shantanu Maheshwari) and Vasu aka Vasudha (Sai Manjrekar). Both are sitting on the seashore of Mumbai and talking. Vasu, sitting with her head on Krishna’s shoulder, asks him – ‘Krishna, no one will separate us, right?’ To this Krishna replies – ‘We checked, no one has been born yet. If anyone even tries, we will set the world on fire.’ After this you see Krishna (Ajay Devgan), who has turned from a young and bubbly boy to a dangerous one, in jail with other prisoners. Krishna’s dominance is such that other prisoners take the narrow lane while removing his glasses. And those who survive are not able to stand in front of him again.

Krishna has been serving a sentence for double murder for 22 years. He is now known to everyone in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. He is respected by everyone from the policemen to the prisoners. Meanwhile, when he comes to know that his 25-year sentence has been reduced and he has to go home now, he gets scared. Krishna, who became an orphan in childhood, has no home to go back to. Vasudha was everything to him, but at the point of life where they both are standing, it is impossible to accept each other. In such a situation, what will he do after coming out of the jail? Citing this, he requests to stop his release, but it is of no use.

Coming out of jail means Krishna reliving the events of 22 years ago. Meeting Vasudha (Tabu) again and reliving his past sorrows. Amidst all this, he will have to relive that dark night which changed his and Vasudha’s life from a normal love story to ‘Uparwale Exam’. This story written on paper of young lovers falling in love with each other, meeting every day, then getting separated due to an accident and coming face to face with each other again after years seems very romantic, intense and emotional. But is the picture like this?

The film is very slow, nothing new

The answer is no! This film made by director Neeraj Pandey is very slow. The film starts off very slow. You see Ajay Devgan’s character Krishna in jail and the song ‘Kisi Roz’ is playing in the background, which seems odd for that scene. After this comes the story of young Krishna and Vasudha. Then grown up Krishna and Vasudha meet. Vasudha is now married. She has fulfilled all those dreams which she had seen while being in a relationship with Krishna. All this is happening at such a slow pace in the film that you are not able to hold your interest for a moment. By the end of the first half, you start praying that ‘God please make the second half a little faster’.

But your prayers have no effect and your patience is tested in the entire second half. The problem in watching slow films is more when the director has no film to show. Which is the case with ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’. The story of the film is as much as written in this review. There is a twist at the end of it, which you see coming when the film starts. You know what will be shown next in the film. Which means that you have less chances to see something new. On top of that, Neeraj Pandey is trying his best to make the story written in his four lines into a 2.20 hour long one. In such a situation, he repeats the same scene 5 times from different angles. Apart from this, he has also shown the twist of the film thrice, which was not needed.

The screenplay of the movie is completely clichéd. We have all seen such stories in movies as well as read them in books. If this movie was not extremely slow, then the whole story could have been finished in the first half itself. There is nothing new in the story, but the actors of the movie have done a good job. Because the screenplay is so bad, the actors also had very little chance to do anything special. In the midst of this, Shantanu Maheshwari has played his character of Krishna quite well. Sai Manjrekar supported him well. However, the lack of expression on her face definitely hurts. It was good to see the pair of Ajay Devgan and Tabu together again, but they too have not done much in this explosive film. You can see their good chemistry even in a slow movie. Jimmy Shergill’s character has been wasted completely. The climax of the film is made good only by the good work of all the four stars. The songs of the film are also fine. Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics are used here and there, which I personally liked.
