sc underlined rights of housewives, Highlighting the rights of housewives, the Supreme Court said that they work all day for the welfare of the family without expecting anything in return. The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that an Indian married man should be conscious of the fact that he needs to empower his wife financially as she has no independent source of income.

The court made this remark while hearing a petition filed by a Muslim man against the order to grant interim maintenance to his divorced wife under Section 125 CrPC. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih dismissed the man’s petition and said that the law seeking maintenance would be valid for all women, irrespective of their religion.

‘Because his wife has no independent source of income’

The court said, ‘I believe that an Indian married man should be conscious of the fact that he has to empower his wife financially and take care of her, as his wife has no independent source of income. For this, he has to provide financial resources especially for her personal needs. In other words, he has to provide her access to his financial resources.’

‘With such financial empowerment, the housewife will be in a more secure position in the family’

The bench said such financial empowerment would put the housewife in a more secure position in the family. “Those Indian married men who are conscious of this aspect and who provide financial resources to their spouses for their personal expenses apart from household expenses, possibly by opening a joint bank account or through an ATM card, should be acknowledged,” the court said.
