Ashwini Ponnappa on Prakash Padukone: ‘They jump to take credit for the victory…’, two Indian badminton stars clashed amid defeat and disappointment in the Olympics

Ashwini Ponnappa on Prakash Padukone: Paris Olympics 2024 has not been good at all for Indian badminton. India has not won any medal in this sport. This is the first time since 2012 that India has failed to win a medal in badminton in any Olympics. Lakshya Sen also lost in the bronze medal match.

With Lakshya’s defeat, his dream of winning a medal in badminton was also shattered. After this, Lakshya’s coach Prakash Padukone got very angry and gave a big statement. He said that now the players should take responsibility for the defeat. The federation and the government cannot be held responsible for this.

As soon as Prakash’s statement came out, star badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa got angry. Ashwini has retired from the Olympics after being out of the Paris Olympics. She said through a social media post that when a player wins, everyone jumps to take credit. No one comes forward on defeat.

Why is the coach not held responsible?

Ashwini shared Prakash Padukone’s statement on Instagram. She also wrote her own thoughts. She said, ‘It was very disappointing to see this. If a player wins, everyone jumps to take credit for it and if he loses, is it only the player’s fault?’

Ashwini further wrote, ‘Why are coaches not held responsible for the lack of preparation and not preparing the players? They are the first ones to take credit for victory. Why don’t they also take responsibility for the defeat of their players? After all, it takes a team effort to win and losing is also the responsibility of the team. You cannot suddenly put all the blame on the players.’

‘It’s time for the players to take responsibility’

Prakash Padukone had asked the players to take responsibility for the defeat. He had said, ‘After Milkha Singh in 1964 and PT Usha in the 80s, we have seen many players finish fourth. I think now the time has come for the players to take responsibility.’

He had said, ‘At least you cannot blame the federation and the government for the results of this Olympics and the previous Olympics. They did whatever they could. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the players to perform well when it is needed the most.’
