An Arizona father is facing murder charges after allegedly leaving his 2-year-old daughter in a hot car for over three hours while he was engrossed in playing video games on his PlayStation. The tragic incident resulted in the child’s death.
According to court documents, 37-year-old Christopher Scholtes claimed he initially left his daughter, Parker Scholtes, in the car for a short 30-minute nap after returning home from shopping, in order to avoid disturbing her sleep. However, surveillance footage contradicted his timeline, showing that he had arrived home much earlier and left the child unattended in the sweltering car for an extended period under scorching temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
The court complaint states that Scholtes became absorbed in his video game and household tasks, inadvertently neglecting the child in the car. He admitted that he left the air conditioning running but was aware it would turn off automatically after 30 minutes, raising further concerns about the safety of his actions.
When Scholtes’ wife, a doctor, arrived home at around 4 p.m., she made the devastating discovery of their daughter’s lifeless body in the car. Despite her efforts to resuscitate the child until emergency services arrived, the toddler was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In text messages exchanged between the couple, Erika Scholtes expressed her anguish and scolded her husband for repeating the dangerous behavior of leaving their children unattended in a vehicle. Christopher Scholtes lamented his actions, acknowledging the irreparable harm caused and the tragic loss of their child.

During the court proceedings, Christopher Scholtes was charged with second-degree murder and child endangerment. While his wife pleaded for his release, describing the fatal error as a significant misjudgment and emphasizing the need for the family to grieve together, the judge ultimately upheld the charges.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the grave dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short period. The Marana Police Department has stressed the importance of vigilance and precaution among parents and caregivers to safeguard children’s well-being, expressing solidarity with the affected family and the broader community in the wake of this tragic event.
