Are there different rules of the game in Olympics? Who makes them, where can we challenge?

After Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified, there is a lot of discussion about the rules related to wrestling and Olympics. There is talk about grace etc. in the Olympic rules when there is a disqualification due to just 100 grams of weight. In such a situation, people have a question in their mind that who makes these rules of the Olympics and are these rules slightly different from the rules of the game? At the same time, if someone has a problem with these rules, can he challenge them? So let’s know the answer to every question related to the rules of the Olympics…

Who makes these rules?

The responsibility of organizing the Olympic Games lies with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and each time a particular country hosts it. The IOC decides on the rules and issues related to the players in the Olympics. But, the IOC also works on the basis of the ‘Olympic Charter’. The Olympic Charter is like a set of rules or a code in which some special things related to the Olympics are written. It contains the rules related to the Olympics and all the rules on the basis of which the IOC works. It contains information from the Olympic logo to medals etc.

The rules regarding the events in the Olympics are made by the IOC itself. The IOC works with the Federation of International Bandy (FIB), International Sports Federation, Olympic Charter, International University Sports Federation, World Olympic Association. Any changes in the Olympics are made only on the basis of their decisions.

On the other hand, if we talk about the rules of the game, then these rules are decided by the International Federation, National Olympic Committees and then they are included in the rules of the IOA. International Sports Federation means Badminton World Federation, International Basketball Federation, International Gold Federation etc. There are many federations for each game.

What can be challenged?

If an athlete or a national committee wants to go against any rule or decision, then it can be challenged in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This is an independent body, which has been created by the International Council of Arbitration for Sport. It has been created after the consent of many federations.

Are there different rules?

Generally, the rules of the games played in the Olympics are similar to the rules of normal games. But, in some games, the rules regarding attempts etc. are different. For example, NBA rules for basketball are different, while the rules for basketball in the Olympics are different. In the Olympics, the quarter is of 10 minutes, but in the NBA it is of 12 minutes. Apart from this, some rules are different in field events like long jump etc.

How much grace do you get

It depends on each game how much grace will be given in which game. For example, in wrestling, one usually gets up to 2 kg grace, but this is not the case in Olympics, World Championship and Asian Championship. In many games, the federation also gives grace, but it is not the case in Olympics. Due to this, Vinesh did not get any grace and had to be out due to being 100 grams overweight.
