Anshuman Gaikwad passed away: Veteran cricketer and former coach Anshuman Gaikwad passed away, was ill for a long time

Anshuman Gaekwad passed away: Former Indian cricketer and Team India coach Anshuman Gaikwad has passed away. He has been battling blood cancer for a long time. Seeing Anshuman’s condition, Kapil Dev took the initiative to help him. Kapil had decided to donate his pension to help Anshuman.

Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Madan Lal and Kirti Azad also came forward to help their fellow player. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also helped and announced to give Rs 1 crore for Anshuman’s treatment.

Such is Anshuman’s cricketing career

Anshuman made his Test debut against West Indies in Kolkata on 27 December 1974. His last appearance in a Test match was in the Kolkata Test against England which started on the last day of the year 1984.

Gaikwad scored 1985 runs in his career of 40 Test matches at an average of 30.07, which included 2 centuries and 10 half-centuries. His best score was 201 runs, which he made against Pakistan. Gaikwad also participated in 15 ODIs for India, in which he has scored 269 runs at an average of 20.69.

Did wonders in first class cricket too

71-year-old Anshuman scored 12,136 runs in 206 first class matches at an average of 41.56. During this time, he scored 34 centuries and 47 half-centuries. His best score in first class cricket was 225 runs. Apart from this, Gaikwad also played 55 List-A matches, in which he scored a total of 1601 runs at an average of 32.67.

After retirement, he made a career in coaching

Anshuman took up coaching as a career after retiring from cricket. He was the head coach of the Indian cricket team during 1997-99. Gaikwad also worked for Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GSFC) and retired from the company in 2000.

In June 2018, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) honoured Gaikwad with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Anshuman Gaikwad’s father Datta Gaikwad also represented India in Test cricket.
