Amidst political turmoil, DMK organised a religious event of ‘Murugan’, is this a counter to BJP’s ‘Ram Card’?

These days Tamil Nadu politics is in the news because of the two-day International Muthamizh Murugan Conference organized by DMK. It is natural for discussions to take place because this event was organized by DMK which calls itself secular and whose politics has always been against superstition and against the politics of religion.

Before the Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son and state minister Udayanidhi Stalin’s comment on ‘Sanatana Dharma’ had created a buzz across the country. But now when the DMK itself is organising such events, questions are being raised. The special thing is that these questions are now being raised by DMK’s allies. Now first of all, let us know who said what…

Many allies of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), including CPI(M) and VCK, are opposing the DMK. These parties have expressed displeasure over the DMK’s decision to organize this religious conference and called it against secularism.

CPI(M) protested

CPI(M) party state president K. Balakrishnan said that the government should not organize religious ceremonies as it is against the principle of secularism and the state should stay away from it. He said that this is done by the BJP and RSS. But governments should stay away from such steps.

VCK also expressed displeasure

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) general secretary and MP D. Ravikumar also opposed the state government’s decision and said that organising religious programmes by the government only promotes communalism. One should stay away from this.

The event was held despite opposition

The special thing was that despite the opposition of the allies, DMK organized it. In which devotees from all over the world participated. Udhayanidhi Stalin said during this that some people are raising questions on organizing a religious conference by the government. But this conference has not been organized suddenly. He said that Dravid means everything for everyone. Dravid does not discriminate between anyone. It unites everyone.

‘This event is to counter BJP’?

According to experts, DMK has organized this event with a lot of planning. This strategy of DMK is being seen as an attempt to pit Murugan against BJP’s Ram and to do damage control of the remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin against Sanatan Dharma. According to a media report, DMK leaders say that it is necessary to organize such events to counter the BJP. In recent years, the activities of the saffron party have become more visible even though its electoral impact may not have been as per their expectations.

Actually, DMK has chosen this religious bet of Murugan very wisely, because faith in Murugan is associated with a large scale in Tamil Nadu. Murugan is worshiped as a war god and is depicted with a spear. It is worth noting that Murugan is worshiped by people of different religions. Pilgrimage is done to his places of worship without caste discrimination.
