First Supreme Court Judge from Manipur, After the independence of the country, the Supreme Court may get its first judge from Manipur. In fact, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended two names for the vacant posts of judges. This includes the names of Chief Justice N Kotishwar Singh of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh High Court and Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan of Madras High Court.

If the recommendations of the Collegium are accepted, then Chief Justice of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh High Court N Kotishwar Singh will become the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Let us tell you, in the 70 years of independence of the country, no judge from Manipur has been appointed to the Supreme Court till now.

There are two vacancies in the Supreme Court

The sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 34. However, there are currently 32 judges, which is two less than the sanctioned number. At the same time, Justice Hima Kohli is also going to retire in September, which has increased the need for new appointments. In such a situation, the collegium headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has recommended two names. Other members of the collegium include Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Bhushan R Gavai, Suryakant and Hrishikesh Roy.

Who is Justice N Kotiswar Singh?

Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court N Kotishwar Singh was born on March 1, 1963 in Imphan. He was appointed Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on February 15, 2023. Justice Kotishwar Singh is the son of former Guwahati High Court judge N Ibtombi Singh. After doing LLB from Delhi University in 1986, he started his career from Guwahati High Court. He was appointed as an additional judge in October 2011. The Collegium’s recommendation said that Justice Kotishwar Singh has an impeccable record in terms of judicial ability and the work done by him on the administrative side.
