After raping and murdering the trainee doctor, the accused slept for a long time, washed clothes to erase the evidence… then

The accused arrested for raping and murdering a female trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital returned home and slept and the next morning he washed his clothes to destroy evidence. An officer investigating the case gave this information. However, the police have found blood stains on the shoes of the accused. He is a municipal body volunteer.

Protests continue for the third day
The body of a female post graduate trainee doctor was found on Friday morning, allegedly raped and murdered in a hospital seminar hall. The civic body volunteer was arrested on Saturday. Services at government hospitals across West Bengal were affected as protests continued for the third day on Sunday demanding speedy punishment for those responsible for the crime.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel on Sunday visited the medical establishment for the second time in three days and held a meeting with representatives of the protesting doctors. He claimed that the investigation was transparent and urged people not to spread rumours.

Goyal said, ‘After committing the crime, the accused went home and slept till late on Friday morning. After waking up, he washed the clothes he wore during the crime to destroy evidence. During the search, his shoes were found which had blood stains on them.’

Asked if anyone else was involved in the crime as some people are alleging, he said, “There is no evidence of that yet.” Goyal said the police are waiting for the final post-mortem report as they want to match it with the findings of their investigation.

A police source said that a team of police officers from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) along with the forensic unit on Sunday collected samples from the seminar hall of the hospital.

Toll-free number will be started
The police commissioner said, ‘One of our senior officers has handed over the post-mortem report to the victim’s parents. Our meeting with the protesters was fruitful and we think they are satisfied. As per their demand, we have removed an assistant police officer posted here.’ Goyal said that the police is not trying to hide anything and the investigation is transparent. He said that they will soon start a toll-free number on which people can register suggestions or complaints.

However, the protesting junior doctors said that they will continue their protest till they are fully satisfied and their demands related to safety are addressed. After the meeting with Goyal, a junior doctor said that work will remain closed in all emergency and non-emergency services. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded death penalty for the culprit.
