After rape, she remained a living corpse for 42 years… The heart-wrenching story of Aruna who asked for euthanasia

There is a wave of anger in the whole country after the brutality with the lady doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The investigation of this case has been handed over from Kolkata Police to CBI. The CBI team has reached Kolkata. Meanwhile, Dr. Suvarna Goswami, Additional General Secretary of All India Government Doctors Association has made a sensational claim. According to this, the victim was gang-raped. 151 grams of liquid has been found from her private part, which cannot be of any one person. Such a brutality happened 51 years ago in Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Something similar had happened in that hospital in Mumbai, which has happened 51 years later in the medical college of Kolkata. This time in Kolkata, the target was a junior doctor, while in Mumbai, a nurse named Aruna Shanbag was the target. Aruna came to Mumbai from Karnataka in 1966 and started working as a nurse in King Edward Memorial Hospital. After this, her marriage was fixed with a doctor from the same hospital. But something unfortunate happened to her.

The ward boy strangled Aruna with a dog chain

On 27 November 1973, just a month before her marriage, a ward boy named Sohanal Valmiki raped Aruna Shanbaug inside the hospital. Then, fearing to be caught, he strangled Aruna with a dog chain and fled from there thinking she was dead. But Aruna was not dead. In fact, she was never called alive again after that day. She went into a coma. After this, she remained in a coma for 42 years.

The court rejected Aruna’s plea for euthanasia

During this time some people went to court for her death. Demand for euthanasia was made. But the court refused to grant death. In March 2011, the Supreme Court said that Aruna has to live. Euthanasia cannot be allowed. Before giving the verdict, the court had her checked by a medical board. After the doctors’ report and the arguments of the nurses of KEM hospital, on 7 March 2011 the Supreme Court did not allow euthanasia.

Rape case

For 42 years Aruna lay between life and death

Despite approving passive euthanasia, the court had asked to keep her alive. The court had said in its decision that it is difficult to say what Aruna wants. But her gestures show that she still has love for life. Eating well or showing good attitude towards any staff proves that she wants to live. Hence, for 42 years, her life lay with death. As if both were sleeping together on the bed.

The person who ruined the life of a nurse got only 7 years of imprisonment

After 42 years, suddenly life silently left the bed. Due to pneumonia, Aruna Shanbaug finally got the death which had come 42 years ago but was still far away. Aruna’s culprit Sohan Lal was later sentenced to only seven years. He came out of jail in 1980 after serving the sentence. After his release, he changed his name and identity and worked in a hospital in Delhi. But later he also died.

Aruna’s culprit had said- I ask God for forgiveness!

Sohan Lal had said that he regretted the brutality done to Aruna Shanbaug. He had said in an interview, “I want to apologize to Aruna Didi and my God. I gave up non-vegetarian food, I also gave up smoking bidi and alcohol. Before I went to jail, I had a daughter who died. She died because I had committed a crime. I did not even touch my wife for many years after coming out of jail. My son was born after 14 years.”

Aruna was good in studies, got her first job in 1971

Let us tell you that Aruna Shanbaag had 10 brothers and sisters. When she was 10 years old, her father died. The responsibility of the entire family fell on the children. The elder brothers and sisters worked hard to get Aruna educated because she was fond of studying. After getting her primary education in the village, she came to Mumbai for further studies. She started studying nursing while staying with her elder sister. In the year 1971, she got a job in King Edward Hospital.
