Adopting these tips for liver detox can be costly, doctor advises people

These days, you will find many health-related videos on social media. Many of these also tell home remedies for liver detox. Now experts have asked people to be alert about such remedies and have advised not to adopt them. Experts said that people should not depend on the remedies available on social media to detox the liver and should adopt early preventive lifestyle measures instead of relying on shortcuts.

According to PTI, while participating in the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL-2024) on the topic ‘Liver Facts and Myths – Transforming Liver Health’ in Kochi on Wednesday, liver disease specialists gave several sessions outlining ways to improve liver health.

Quitting alcohol, maintaining proper weight, controlling sugar intake, exercising regularly and adopting a balanced diet are some of the measures that should be followed, experts said.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, chairman of Kerala IMA Research Cell, said that the home remedies being touted on social media for detoxifying the liver have no scientific validity. In modern times, many people use the word detox as it is associated with the ancient belief of freeing the mind from toxic thoughts, but it is not possible to cleanse the liver through such shortcuts.

He said, “The liver is fully capable of cleaning itself. It is more important to avoid consuming substances that harm the liver, such as alcohol. Being the largest organ of the body, the liver acts like a chemistry laboratory, efficiently separating beneficial and harmful substances that enter the stomach.”

It further said that liver disease in the early stages often does not show any symptoms. Health experts at the conference highlighted the increasing prevalence of fatty liver disease due to alcohol consumption and poor lifestyle and advised people to adopt early preventive lifestyle measures instead of relying on shortcuts.
