Accident happened in a coaching centre 5 KM away from Parliament, rescue team arrived late, these flaws were exposed after the incident

After the accident at RAU’s IAS coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi, questions are being raised about the capability of Delhi’s disaster response system. This accident happened just 5 kilometers away from the country’s Parliament. After this accident, not only the flaws in the city’s infrastructure came to the fore, but it has also become clear that there was a delay in emergency response.

The rescue team’s work was slow, which started only an hour after the first information about the accident was received. Despite the emergency services including local police stations and fire brigade department being nearby, their response was quite delayed. Let’s take a look at what happened after the accident…

– The accident took place in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi
– On July 27 at 6:30 pm, the basement of Rau’s IAS Academy was flooded
– Rescue operation started one hour after receiving the information.
– The first body was recovered at 10:39 pm.
– The second body was recovered at 11:18 pm.
– The third body was found at 1:12 am.
– According to Delhi Police’s FIR, 3 feet of water had accumulated in the basement (parking area)

Response of Delhi Fire Service

– According to Delhi Fire Service, rescue operations began at 7:00 pm
– 5 fire engines were rushed to the spot and students were evacuated from the basement.

Police presence

– A police picket booth outside Rau’s IAS coaching centre was found empty, with no officer or constable present at the crucial time.
– Rau’s IAS coaching centre is located at a distance of 2 km from Rajendra Nagar Police Station, 3.4 km from Patel Nagar Police Station and 1.3 km from Karol Bagh Police Station. Despite this, the police and emergency services arrived very late.

– NDRF and SDRF teams arrived 30 minutes late, three lives could have been saved if they had arrived on time.
– Delay in emergency response exposes Delhi’s preparedness for disasters
– Concerns have been raised about the preparedness of agencies like Delhi Police, MCD, NDRF and Delhi Fire Services.

After the accident, the police arrested 7 accused

After the accident, Delhi Police has arrested 7 people including the owner of the coaching center, building floor owners and a car driver. All the accused have been sent to 14-day judicial custody. The bail hearing of car driver Manoj Kathuria is going on, the police has said that negligent driving was the main cause of the deaths. Additionally, the police has requested the MCD to provide information about the officials responsible for flood management and any related drainage tenders, while a report is expected from the divisional commissioner.

Angry students are protesting

After this accident, UPSC candidates are protesting in Old Rajendra Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar. They are also demanding compensation of Rs 5 crore to the family of each victim who lost his life in the accident, accountability for the officials and academy management and a ban on basement coaching centers.
