It has been more than a month since the Lok Sabha elections ended, but even after so many days the defeated MPs are not ready to leave their bungalows. After which now they have been sent notices to vacate the bungalows. According to information received by PTI from sources, the number of former MPs who have not vacated their bungalows is around 200.

Bungalows are in Lutyens Delhi

More than 200 former members of the Lok Sabha have been issued notices to vacate government bungalows allotted to them in Lutyens’ Delhi, sources in the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said on Monday. The notices have been issued to the former MPs under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act.

What does the law say about vacating a bungalow?

According to the rules, former MPs have to vacate their government bungalows within a month of the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha. Sources said, “So far, more than 200 former MPs have been issued notices to vacate the bungalows for staying longer than the prescribed time. They have been asked to vacate their government bungalows as soon as possible. The process of sending notices to other former MPs is underway.”

If you do not agree then you will be forcibly evicted

Sources said if they do not vacate their government accommodation soon, teams of officials will soon be sent for “forceful eviction”. While the Lok Sabha Secretariat provides accommodation to MPs, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) allots bungalows to Union ministers in Lutyens’ Delhi. If former ministers and former MPs do not vacate their government bungalows within the stipulated time period, eviction proceedings are initiated against them.

Who vacated the bungalows?

More than four former Union ministers, including Smriti Irani, have vacated their official bungalows in Lutyens Delhi so far. Smriti vacated her official bungalow at 28 Tughlaq Crescent in Lutyens Delhi earlier this month. She had lost the Amethi Lok Sabha seat to Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma by a margin of more than 1.5 lakh votes in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
